Health Objective # 1

Educate on Healthy Lifestyles and Hereditary diseases

What are we doing to accomplish this objective?

  • Minority Health Month - Block out the month of April (Minority Health Month) on your calendar; there will be a variety of Minority Health Month activities. There will be workshops on topics such as preparing health foods and snacks, overall healthy lifestyles including diet and exercise, disease prevention and risk factors related to hereditary diseases.
  • Health Fairs - Check out our quarterly Health Fairs. We provide on-the-spot screenings for certain diseases. Doctors and nurse practitioners provide information on free medical services available locally. There are also separate workshops for men and women. Click here to check the calendar of up-coming Health Fairs.

Health Objective # 2

Access to Healthcare and Prescription Medicines is improved

What we are doing to accomplish this objective -

  • LCUL has formed a Health Advisory Committee
  • Relationship with area hospitals and doctors
  • Network of referral services
  • Developing service delivery infrastructure through Asthma Demonstration and Intervention Project

Each year the Lorain County Urban League hosts several Health Fairs in which we share information with the community on various health disparities. This year the LCUL has been selected as the Lead Agency by the Commission on Minority Health to host a kick off event. Please see the Event Page for upcoming health-related activities.

If you are interested in a health demonstration or presentation by our Health Director, please call the Urban League. We are currently doing Asthma Presentations in the schools.

Health Advisory Board

The Lorain County Urban League has been actively developing and fine tuning the mission of the Health Education, Promotion, and Prevention Department. Our goals are to provide leadership to minorities in health education and to contribute to the health of all people through advances in health education theory, excellence in health education practice, and the promotion of public policies conducive to health related matters that are prevalent among minorities. The Urban League plans to focus on the top 6 health related issues plaguing minorities; Asthma, Cancer, Cardiovascular diseases, primarily hypertension, Diabetes, Infant mortality and Substance abuse.

We have made it our mission to bring higher levels of awareness to the African-American and Hispanic Communities, by promoting healthy living and awareness of health disparities that affect these populations in Lorain County. To date we have done this with the Asthma Prevention and Intervention Project which is serving African American and Hispanic population in Elyria, Lorain and Oberlin. In order to maintain effective programming that will encompass health awareness, education and prevention, we need to organize community members, business owners, and managers of Lorain County. This will support the creation of healthier environments in all public places, make this health concern known to all city Council members and urge them to pass legislation for Ordinances affecting affordable medication, hospitalization and medical insurance.
