The Urban Youth Adventure Challenge (UYAC)
"There are no limitations in what you can do except the limitations of your own mind"
Darwin P. Kingsley
The UYAC is a behavior modification project that teaches disadvantaged youth how to overcome obstacles that often get in the way of their academic, social, emotional and career development. The project is designed to engage youth through a series of challenges, which help them to confront fears and anxieties; overcoming those fears and anxieties ultimately lead to them building self-esteem and confidence. UYAC also helps young people to connect to each other through teamwork and friendly competitions. Participants demonstrate their connection and commitment to the community by engaging in meaningful community service projects.
Approach
Each activity is hands-on with no opportunity for any youth to opt out. Some of the activities that most of the young people never imagined the possibility of ever doing include: horseback riding, kayaking, swimming, and learning how to use astronomical instruments.
What Has Been Accomplished
Over the past 6 years, more that 350 youth have successfully completed the project. Indicators of success that they demonstrated include ability to control emotions, overcome challenges, becoming team players, and setting and achieving personal goals. Lorain City Schools, as well as former Ohio Governor, Ted Strickland, have utilized the services of UYAC to address challenges such as absenteeism, lack of motivation, and "Closing the Achievement Gap."
