Read and Rise Family Literacy
The Read and Rise Family Literacy Program is designed to promote the love of reading and to support young children to become independent readers by the time they reach the age of 10 or the fourth grade.
Why Family Literacy? It has been often said that the "Home is a child's first school." We work with the entire family because children learn by imitating what they see adults do, particularly their parents.
What We Do
The Read and Rise program provides:
- Free Books and Free School Supplies to Low-income Children
- Reading Activities for children
- Training for parents
Educational Materials: Free Books and School Supplies
Our Approach: The Read and Rise Program provides Free Books and School Supplies to low income children.
Why Free Books? Studies have documented that Children who have books at home are more likely to read often. We distribute over 4,000 books and children magazines to low-income children each year.
What we have accomplished: We have distributed over 24,000 books to low-income children since the program started.
Early Literacy: Reading to Children
Our Approach: The Read and Rise Program supports Neighborhood Reading Centers where volunteers read to children throughout the year.
Why Read To Children? Most Children don't have anyone reading to them at home. yet, research shows that children who are read to are more likely to develop a love of reading.
What we have accomplished: Children in our program can read age/grade appropriate books - perform better than the general population in reading assessments.
Support for the Family: Training for Parents and Caregivers
Parent Training includes - Tips on how to create a home environment that supports learning - Vital skills (spoken words, written words, word power, etc.) that children need to acquire at different age/grade levels - Tips on planning and having effective parent/teacher conferences, and much, much more.
Why Train Parents? Numerous research findings indicate that parents who are aware and knowledgeable about their roles are more likely to be involved in the education of their children.
What we have accomplished: Teachers thank us because they observe that parents who have benefitted from our program attend parent teacher's conferences more, and are asking more insightful questions about how their children are doing in school.
