Mission and Strategy

The Lorain County Urban League (LCUL) was established in 1978 as an independent 501 (c) 3 agency. Its office is located in Elyria, Ohio. The agency provides an array of services that are divided into four major divisions. These divisions are Education, Housing, Workforce Development and Health. LCUL provides services throughout Lorain County with particular focus on the cities of Elyria, Lorain, and Oberlin. These three cities have the largest concentration of African Americans, Hispanic/Latinos, and other economically disadvantaged persons in Lorain County. The strategies that LCUL uses to pursue its mission of, “Assisting African Americans and all disadvantaged persons in our community to participate equally in the educational, economic, and social mainstream” combines advocacy and direct services to:

  • Ensure that our children are well-educated and equipped for economic self-reliance in the 21st Century;
  • Help adults and older youth to attain economic self-sufficiency through good jobs, homeownership and entrepreneurship;
  • Ensure that individuals and families in our community have access to fair and affordable housing, and
  • Promote healthy lifestyles and assisting the population we serve to gain access to healthcare and medical services.
We give individuals a hand‐up to help them to become contributing members of society.
